Proposal for 5 Traffic Signals on State Highway 35 between Dommasandra and Attibele
As the Sarjapur Road growth corridor in the Greater Bengaluru Area gets more and more residential and commercial development, it is important that the traffic management improves to ensure vehicles flow smoothly.
This is why we are proposing the addition of traffic light controls on 5 key junctions that see heavy traffic build up today due to a lack of coordination between vehicles. It’s the social game-theory played every day between Indian motorists who refuse to yield and give way to others out of fear that the favor won’t be returned due to past experience. This leads to regular grid-lock at these junctions.
A signal (traffic light) control will at least guide motorists as to which direction of traffic should have the right of way at a given time and prevent gridlock caused by a lack of coordination between vehicles crossing the junction from different directions. Hence, improving throughput.
Now, we all know that many Indian drivers also jump the red lights and will enter a junction even if their exit isn’t clear which blocks other directions even if their light is green. But y’all should at least try!
Currently these 5 junctions require regular police intervention to prevent gridlock which is not only tiring work, but it’s also not always effective as vehicles openly ignore the instructions of the on-duty officers. The addition of traffic signals will alleviate this and work 24 x 7 thereby freeing up police officers to carry out more important law-enforcement tasks.
Signal 1. SH35 x Sarjapur-Ambalipura Rd (Dommasandra Circle)

The flyover isn’t finished, the road is total garbage, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put up traffic lights. Keeping this junction “free” means trucks and buses regularly block each other as they clash with straight traffic travelling inbound and outbound from the city along with blocking right turning traffic heading north/south towards Gunjur and Varthur. 2-3 Police officers are regularly present trying to manage the junction, but even they are often powerless to stop determined drivers from squeezing into every last bit of space and blocking the junction.
Signal 2: Chambanahalli Temple Rd x SH35

Signal 3: Prestige City “Eternity Drive) x SH35

Traffic Lights 2 and 3 are 600m apart and will need to be synchronized to prevent traffic build up between the junctions. In the morning, traffic will exit prestige city and proceed inbound towards the city, while in the evenings traffic will return in the opposite direction.
As more phases of Prestige city open up, greater vehicular flow will pass through these junctions requiring a traffic signal to help vehicle coordinate between each other.
Signal 4. Sarjapur Circle

This one should be obvious to anyone with half-a-brain. Maybe if 8 of you work together, you’ll figure it out. This junction sees heavy truck traffic moving in all 3 directions. The large trucks often get entangled with each other causing grid-lock and blocking the entire junction.
Since this is a 3 way junction there could be a provision to allow a single lane to bypass the signal from Ambalipura Sarjapur rd and merge back on Bagalur Sarjapur Rd.
Signal 5: SH 35 x Hosur Rd (NH 44) in Attibele
The fact that there is currently no traffic light already installed between a State Highway and a Major National Highway is baffling to me. This junction often gets backed up 1-2kms as trucks and cars all tangle themselves under the bridge forming a massive gridlock. It over takes 2-3 police officers aided by 3-4 volunteers to clear the junction. The blockages add 20-30 minutes to a commute which can be solved by implementing traffic signals which control the right-of-way between all 4 directions of traffic.
